Sitting in a quiet theater in Washington, D.C., watching I Will Follow, Ava DuVernay’s intimate debut film about one woman’s journey through grief, I was struck by how rare it was to see a movie like that, one that centered a Black woman in a quiet domestic drama. And one that was told by a Black woman director at the helm. That moment from 2011 stayed with me and later inspired me to found Black Women Directors (BWD), a digital archive that celebrates the work of Black women and nonbinary filmmakers worldwide.
